Enough About Italy...
It came to my attention that I have little personal information posted on this site. Perhaps I thought who I am was not so remarkable. Since there’s been expressed interest, I’ll divulge a bit about myself here. I am female and 27 years old. I was born in San Diego, California and have also lived in Michigan, North Carolina, Utah and of course now in Italy. Italy is the only country I’ve been to outside of America. Well except for Mexico but when you come from San Diego, Mexico doesn’t really count as a foreign country. I could go on and on about various adventures I’ve had in my short life. Some of them dangerous some exciting but it would probably bore you to tears as we all believe our own lives are spectacularly unique and fascinating when in reality they are only a bit of history repeating. What I will tell you about is how I came to be in Italy married to my Italian husband, Davide.
I’ll just come right out and say it…we met ONLINE. Who finds love online? That’s exactly what I had always thought. I mean, I have enough character and charm to meet men in “real life”….don’t I? I was beginning to doubt this as everyone I met seemed “off” in some way, just not was I was looking for. Then POOF appearing on my myspace account straight from Italy, there was Davide. Strangely enough it was all one big coincidence. He had intended on opening an account for his friend and himself in the “music artists” section and mistakenly opened it in the defaulted “average Joe” setting. He used this personal account as a little experiment in human behavior, responding to anyone who sent him a message. He also set up a program that sent out friend requests to random myspace users. I received one of these requests and being from a complete stranger in another country I was tempted to just delete it. I didn’t, there was something about him. I wrote back asking why a man with over a thousand “friends” on his list would want to add another and why ME? He explained the whole “add machine” program but assured me that after my humble approach he would be much more interested in talking to me than the chick in Florida who spanks elderly men on youtube. Yes, myspace holds all kinds of strange and unusual characters…human behavior experiment, indeed!
I few months pass filled with instant messages sent all day every day. I was thrilled about my new found internet companion, my boss was not. Work days were spent playing games with each other online and learning everything possible, through written word, about one another. First we were fascinated then we started to fall and fall hard. We eventually professed our love and graduated to a more advanced form of communication…webcam! We made computer dates where we could talk online and actually see each other. Through this medium he met most of my family… my very skeptical and disapproving family. This did not concern us, we decided we had to meet.
For any of you who have flown across the globe you know it can be very expensive. As luck would have it, I was due to collect $3,000 from southwest airlines for losing my luggage (did I just call that “lucky”???). I knew that I was not just going for an Italian vacation but that I was quite possibly going to meet the love of my life. How naïve, right? That’s just what everyone else thought too but I was going to jump in and give this all I had. I was ready for an adventure and I had to fund this wild ride so I sold everything I owned. I sold my car, bed, furniture, books, dishes, clothes, everything. I quit my job, turned off the utilities, and informed my landlord of my departure. I was outta’ there. As I was about to purchase the airline ticket a friend who works with Delta gave me the greatest gift. I special pass that would allow me to travel standby for a mere $400.00 round trip. I even got to sit in first class since it was available. Something I’d never been able to afford and probably never will. Jesus was smiling on me. It was an answer to my prayers as I didn’t make much selling my things so most of my money would have been spent on the travel.
My Mom was beside herself and the rest of my family a bit shocked but I was going, none the less. In the end my Mom accepted it and her and my step dad even bought me some beautiful luggage for my trip.
****A funny side note: Two days before I was to leave I decided to perm (at home) my recently colored hair for less fuss styling while I was away. I fried it completely. As I unrolled the curlers my hair came off with it. It was literally falling apart. I just DIED! I was mortified at the thought of meeting Davide in this state. I went to a salon where they just looked at my hair and shook their heads and went to snipping. What a nightmare. Now back to my story*****
Davide met me at the Rome airport with a huge smile and bigger kiss. His father drove us to their home in Silvi Marina where I met the rest of his wonderfully warm and welcoming family. From that point it’s been a bit of a whirlwind. We ended up back in America for a visit to my family and I ended up landing a job at Delta while we were there. The flight benefits were too good to pass up. We traveled the US a bit and even ended up getting married in Honolulu. The ceremony was on the beach, just me, Davide and Reverend Rich. He was like the absent minded professor in a Hawaiian shirt.
Circumstances arose that brought us back to Italy in May 2007. Since then we’ve been trying to find work for Davide, which as you’ve read in other posts, has been fruitless. We’ve filed to return to American and are now just awaiting approval.
This brings us pretty much up to date. That’s my story of meeting my husband in a really large nutshell.
Good luck in love to you all.
